2025 PAC-12 Recap Week-6

Oregon State at Appalachian State

Falling into a hole and down 17-0 at the end of the 1st Qtr, Oregon State came back after missing a field goal to start the second by scoring on back-to-back TD’s to cut the lead to 17-14.  The first TD was on a drive that included a 37 yard pass from Junior QB Maalik Murphy to Senior WR Trent Walker and a 30 yard TD run by Sophomore WR David Wells Jr.; while the second was at the end of an 8 play 93 yard drive where Murphy hit Wells in the end zone. Appalachian State would have an opportunity to extend the lead right before the half but their Freshman Place Kicker Dominic De Freitas would miss a 41 yard field goal with only 30 seconds left to play.

Getting the ball to start the second half the Mountaineers would drive it 76 yards in 13 plays and six plus minutes to find their way back into the end zone on a 28 yard TD pass from Sophomore QB JJ Kohl to WR Davion Dozier to take a 24-14 lead. The Beavers would follow suit in half the time to cut the lead back down to 24-21 on a 15 yard Maalik Murphy TD pass to Freshman RB Cornell Hatcher Jr.  Appalachian State would make it back downfield in a little over four minutes but would get stuck in place about five plus yards outside the Beaver’s red zone where Dominic De Freitas would connect on a field goal even longer than the one he missed at the end of the first half to give the Mountaineers a six point edge going into the 4th.  With a quarter that consisted of a couple of three-and-outs by the Beavers as well as two interceptions the six point gap turned out to be enough only because after an Oregon State punt down to the three yard line the Mountaineers recovered their own fumble in the end zone on their play out of scrimmage instead of Oregon State. As a result, instead of losing the game 28-27 had the Beavers recovered the ball they hung on for a 27-23 victory.

For Oregon State, Junior QB Maalik Murphy was 30-of-45 for 358 yards, 2 TD’s—one to Sophomore WR David Wells Jr and the other to Freshman RB Cornell Hatcher Jr—and 2 interceptions. Senior RB Anthony Hankerson did the most work on the ground for the Beavers rushing 19 times for 64 of the team’s total 98 yards with Wells picking up the only TD. For the Mountaineers, Sophomore QB JJ Kohl connected on 13-of-28 for 218 yards and 1 TD to Sophomore WR Davion Dozier who picked up 140 of those yards on just 4 receptions.  On the ground Appalachian State ran the ball 36 times for 136 yards and 2 TD’s, one by Kohl and other by Senior RB Rashod Dubinion.  The Beavers led in first downs, 27-18; total yards of offense, 456-354; had the ball longer with fewer penalties; but had three turnovers to none for the Mountaineers.  Now 0-6, Oregon State heads back to Corvallis to take on Wake Forest.
