Toledo at Washington State
After losing back-to-back games by only a combined 5 points to a couple of Top-20 teams, the Cougars got back on track to become bowl eligible with a 28-7 victory at home over Toledo. With five punts all together in the first quarter including a few three-and-outs, this game started out going nowhere fast and didn’t change much for three of the four quarters. But in the second the Cougars scored on back-to-back-to-back TD’s before Toledo finally got one of their own to make it 21-7 going into the half. Since you already know the final score you can see that only one other TD was scored the rest of the entire game and that was by Washington State after an interception of Toledo about half way through the fourth quarter.
For the Cougars, Senior QB Zev Eckhaus was 10-of-22 for 159 yards, 2 TD’s—one each to Freshman WR Carter Pabst and Junior WR Tony Freeman—and 2 interceptions while also leading the team rushing with 74 carries and a TD on 15 carries. Collectively Washington State gained 162 yards on the ground and another TD by Sophomore RB Kirby Vorhees on 44 carries. For the Rockets, Senior QB Tucker Gleason was 26-of-41 for 238 yards, 1 TD to Senior WR Junior Vandeross, and 1 interception. On the ground Toledo rushed 24 times for 61 yards without ever hitting pay dirt.
So far unable to win a game on the road but with a 4-0 record out in the Palouse, with two home games remaining it certainly seems pretty likely that Washington State will play their way into bowl eligibility. The odds are also pretty good for getting their first road win of the season coming up this Saturday in Corvallis against the only other survivor of the PAC-12 implosion—Oregon State.
