The Sun Devils let this one get away at the start and were never able to catch up in a 30-22 loss on the road to the Red Raiders. Texas Tech wasted no time scoring a TD on their first possession of the game, a 10 play 65 yard drive ending with a five yard TD pass from Junior QB Behren Morton to TE Johncarlos Miller to go up 7-0. Starting at their own 25 yard line, the Sun Devils would get tagged with an unnecessary roughness penalty on their first play after the kickoff and wind up 1st and 22 at their own 13 yard line. To make matters worse three plays later Arizona State Freshman QB Sam Leavitt would have a pass intercepted at the ASU 38 yard line. A little over two minutes later Morton would connect for another TD, this one for 20 yards to Senior WR Josh Kelly to go up 14-0 half way into the 1st Qtr.
After forcing a Texas Tech three-and-out early in the 2nd Qtr Arizona State would finally get points on the board with a 34 yard Ian Hershey field goal and a TD two possessions later on a Sam Leavitt TD run to make it 14-10 with less than two minutes left in the half. But that was long enough for the Red Raiders who would go on a 64 yard 8 play drive in less than 1:30 to set up Senior Place Kicker Gino Garcia for a 30 yard field goal to go up 17-10 right before the half.
Arizona State got the ball to start the 3rd Qtr but was held to a three-and-out followed by another score by the Red Raiders, this one a 3 yard TD run by Jalen Conyers at the end of a 12 play 68 yard drive. Returning the favor and holding Texas Tech to a three-and-out on their next possession, Arizona State would close the gap to 24-16 on a Sam Leavitt 11 yard run followed by a 66 yard pass completion to Cam Skattebo and 3 yard TD run. But every time the Sun Devils would inch closer the Red Raiders would tack up a few more points—a field goal on each of their next two possessions to make it 30-16. Arizona State would close to within eight points at the end of a 10 play 67 yard drive on another Skattebo 3 yard TD run to make it 30-22. But with less than two minutes left in the game the Red Raiders ran the clock out from there.
For Arizona State, Leavitt would connect on 22-of-38 for 282 yards, no TD’s and one interception while also rushing 9 times for 25 yards and 1 TD. Senior RB Cam Skattebo would rush 18 times for 60 of the Sun Devils 94 yards and the other 2 TD’s. Place Kicker Ian Hershey provided the rest of the points on a field goal and PAT. For Texas Tech, Junior QB Behren Morton connected on 24-of-44 for 201 yards and 2 TD’s without a pick. On the ground Senior RB Tahj Brooks carried the load rushing 27 times for 117 of the Red Raiders 136 total yard on the ground with Senior TE Jalin Conyers picking up the only rushing TD. After a bye week Arizona State will play host on October 5th to Kansas.
