2023 PAC-12 Week-11 Stanford at Oregon State

Stanford found out this past Saturday what San Diego State, UCLA, and Utah could have told them ahead of time—it’s damn hard to win in Corvallis.  After winning a clunky 26-19 game against Colorado last week, the Beavers didn’t leave any wiggle room in this one while blowing out the Cardinals 62-to-17.  It would have still been a blowout of sorts but the score could have been a lot closer had Stanford not thrown up four interceptions, three of which went for TD’s with most of the rest of their possessions ending in punts or turnovers on downs.  The Oregon State defense was all over Stanford in this one, accounting for six sacks and twelve tackles for loss.

For the Cardinal, Sophomore QB Ashton Daniels threw for 10-of-16 for 200 yards, 1 TD, and 3 interceptions while also rushing 9 times for 37 more yards and their only rushing TD. Backup Justin Lamson, who came in late in the game, connected on just 25% of his throws for 42 yards in the air, 17 yards rushing on the ground, and another interception.  All toll the Cardinal rushed 32 times for 82 yards, an average of less than three yards per carry.  For Oregon State, starting QB DJ Uiagalelei connected on 12-of-19 for 240 yards, 2 TD’s, and no picks while Freshman backup Aidan Chiles was 5-of-8 for 75 yards and another TD while also rushing for 14 more yards and another score. Sophomore RB Damien Martinez, who is the top rusher in the PAC-12 with 1,024 yards on the season, had a monster game while rushing 15 times for 146 yards and a career high 4 TD’s.  Add in Senior RB DeShaun Fenwick’s 61 yards and rushing TD along with three other contributors and Oregon State collectively rushed 40 times for 277 yards and 6 TD’s, an average of almost 7 yards per carry.

The closest Stanford ever got in this one was down by just a TD, 14-to-7, at the end of the 1st Qtr.  They were 24 points back by the half, 38 down by the end of three, and by 45 when it was all said and done. The Beavers out-paced the Cardinal in 1st Downs, 29-18; Passing Yards, 321-242 and Rushing Yards at 277-to-82.  The only statistical category Stanford led in was turnovers, 4-0.  Oregon State is not yet out of the hunt for the conference championship, but it’s a tough road and will have to beat No. 5 Washington and No. 6 Oregon back-to-back in order to have a chance to make it into the game.  Stanford heads back home to take on Cal.
